INDEPENDENT SKILLS

The ECCE programme follows the Montessori curriculum where the children work on their independent skills through the use of concrete materials.

They enjoy working in all areas of the classroom and can quickly develop language and numeracy skills. The programme encourages freedom of movement and the development of both large and small motor skills.

We aim to promote a strong sense of self, which is nutured by our warm and caring teachers. The outdoor environment plays an important role in their development and daily routine.

method

self concept

Since opening in 1993 Horizons Montessori School has been nurturing children and directing them to develop to their individual ability in a Montessori environment that is true to the teachings of Maria Montessori.

Maria Montessori

The Montessori method of education, named after the Italian physician Maria Montessori, emphasises the importance of the development of self-concept.

She believed education to be a preparation for life, not a search for intellectual skills.

Through her own teachings and discoveries Maria Montessori learned that the mind of the young child is absorbent.

Therefore the environment should be prepared carefully to train senses, to stimulate curiosity, to satisfy the need to know and to protect the child from unnecessary failure.

Sensory Motor Activities

The environment is set up as a bridge between the home and the wider world.

In early childhood, Montessori students learn through sensory-motor activities.

Working with materials that develop their cognitive powers through direct experience and use of all their senses.

Children move from the concrete to the abstract.

Developing at their own individual pace.
